When you visit Morocco, Atlas Film Studios is unique attraction. Named for its proximity to the Atlas Mountains, Atlas Film Studios is the largest film studio in the world. It is located just five miles outside of Ouarzazate on the road to Marrakech and is a popular tourist destination.
Atlas became the first film studio to open in North Africa in 1983. Considered as Africa Hollywood, many productions that are epic, Biblical or middle east in nature were filmed here. Over the years, Ouarzazate has served as a shooting location for Alexander the Great, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, Babel, The Mummy (1999), Star Wars (1977), The Living Daylights (1987), Martin Scorsese’s Kundun (1997) and many others, including Ridley Scott’s epic Gladiator (2000) and Body of Lies (2008). Most recently, Atlas Film Studios was used for filming scenes in “Game of the Thrones” and Disney's upcoming live-action "Aladdin," starring by Will Smith. Since the 1980s, over 200 films and television shows have been filmed here.
The benefit of filming here includes reduction in costs and having many local experienced technicians who have been trained up over the years. Atlas Film Studios also become a huge part of the town's economy. Many locals including me participate filming when needed.
Atlas Studios opens from 8:15am to 5:15 pm but 6:15 pm in summer. The entrence ticket is 50 Dhs for adult and 35 Dhs for child. All tours come with a professional tour guide.
